Surviving Wayne
I find that it is a full time job surviving myself. I and my quirks and imperfections will be the fall of me. Thanks to God, my Creator, Protector, and Savior, survival is immanent.

Things In My Bible 3
I wrote a name in my Bible. That name...

Jason McClendon

During my second year of training at the CFOT, I was assigned to a co-op at Phillips State Prison just north of Atlanta. I had this appointment for just one quarter. There were four of us assigned to this co-op. I was the only of the four of us who had never been in jail or prison.

Frank Kirkpatrick encouraged me by telling me to keep my back against the wall. I was a bit nervous to say the least.

To make a long story a little bit shorter I found myself in a locked down building with a bunch of rough looking people. I made my way around the room, just making conversation and trying not to look scared. I was approached by a guy whose name I learned was Jason... Jason McClendon.

Jason was a Muslim. "Interesting," I thought. This was the stage in my life when I was a bit self-righteous about my theology. We talked in depth about the differences between Christianity and Islam. Even though we disagreed a great deal, it was always with respect for the other's faith.

Throughout the quarter, my fear went away and was replaced with confidence in why God had brought me there. I met and counseled with several prisoners every week, but there was always time to chat with Jason.

Towards the end of the quarter, we fell on the subject of "what if." I asked what he would do if he got out tomorrow. He said he would probably get married and move out of the country. I asked why. He said that he needed a new start because anyone who knew his past could not love him or give him a chance. I told him that everyone had a past of sorts, but that isn't what our future has to be.

He said that I had become his friend, but that I would not want to be his friend once I knew what he had done. I said, "Try me." He rolled up his sleeves and pulled up his shirt to show me his arms and chest. They were covered with gang tattoos.

"I have killed eight people," he said, "and after another eight years here, I will be serving three life sentences in California." "In my faith," he added, "I am despicable."

"That's the difference," I said, "Jesus doesn't care. He thinks you are special and loved you enough to die for you... regardless of what he knew you would do.... and that doesn't change the fact that I care about you and pray for you everyday."

A few weeks later, we (the cadets) did an evening service at the prison. Jason came to the service. I prayed with him. He still claimed he was a Muslim, but I think he was a closet Christian.

I still see his name in my Bible. I often wonder if someone has taken the time to invest in Jason like I did. I guess I will know if I see him in glory.

I survived.

Things In My Bible 2
When someone says something in a sermon (or other event where I have my Bible with me) that seems to be profound, I write it down in the pages of my Bible. This particular thing that I jotted down was stated in a sermon by someone I don't particularly like. Nonetheless, it was a profound statement.

The statement:

"Love is a space where all emotions can be expressed and felt."

Something became real to me with that statement. We all desire to be loved for who we are in spite of the areas of us that aren't so pleasant. I believe that is a desire that we have acquired by being created in the image of God. I believe that God, like us, desires to be loved because of who he is, not for what he can do for or to us.

God created us to have free will so that we freely decide whether or not we love him. Of course, if we choose not to love Him, we will be condemned to eternal damnation. That truth aside, He desires we love Him just because... and that is it. He doesn't want us to love Him so he will not punish us for all eternity.

Anyway... I survived.

Things In My Bible
During church today, I found myself looking through my Bible. I wasn't actually reading the scripture, but looking at misc bookmarks I have and things I have written throughout the pages. It was a nice stroll down memory lane. AN IDEA! I want to share some of these things with you.

This is something I took from a brigade worship in training.

If I remember correctly, that brigade consisted of me, Paula, Chad and Jessica W., John and Christina B., Anthony and Elizabeth J., and Bobbie Oakes (now Bobbie Sams). John and Karen Carter were the brigade officers.

This particular semester, Anthony and Elizabeth were leading a different brigade for their "Co-Op" so they were not with us at this time. Chad and Jessica were hosting/leading this particular brigade worship. That morning, only me, Paula, Chad, Jessica, Bobbie, and John were in attendance.

Chad gave each of us a note card with our name at the top. We passed the cards around and everyone wrote some words of encouragement on the card. I still have that card in my Bible and it certainly does give me encouragement.

I survived.

Make Better Time Choices
I saw a commercial on the news about some local churches making yet another big deal over something trivial. Let me set this up by saying that the Dead Sea Scrolls are on display here in Charlotte for a few months.

Apparently, some vendors have made "Dead Sea Scroll" memorobelia such as hats, ties, and t-shirts. Some local churches are raising a big stink saying that these vendors are just trying to "cash in."

HELLO!!! CAN I SLAP YOU NOW OR LATER?!

Firstly, these items can be conversation starters that may lead someone to Christ. Secondly, anyone who has enough free time to complain about something so trivial needs to find a hobby of sorts.

In my last church, in Charlotte (which will remain nameless, but I think you can guess it), we had the same type of issues within the congregation. Our pastors, who are good friends, were constantly bombarded with people telling them how much they are doing wrong or that what they are doing is not liked. People want to complain about the type of music in church and who was or wasn't a participant. Gripes arose about who was in the know of certain things and who was not. All that wasted time used to tear down the church family. Imagine if that time was used more constuctively, like telling people about Jesus.

Have I ever told you I look up to Martin Luther?

Anyway.. that was my soapbox for the night.

I survived.

I miss you all!
I am realizing how much I miss my friends. Paula and I get so busy (I think) that we never see our friends. I am talking about our local friends. We have a lot of friends at Charlotte Temple we saw quite a bit when we were involved there. Now that we are at the Rock Hill Corps, we never see them.

Hey everyone! Yeah, you! I miss seeing you so often. We need to get together... SOON!

I am surviving, but seeing you would be nice. Call us!

Paula and I both love this show. It is a remake of the 70's action television show. We haven't seen it in forever since the Writers Guild Strike. How sad!!

Listening

Harry Connick, JR

Harry Connick Jr's newest album, "Oh, My Nola" is full of music from New Orleans or written by artists from New Orleans. Since Paula and I lived in New Orleans, it is special to us. We actually got to see the concert for this album live. It was great. You have got to check this out!
